Firefighters responded Tuesday night to a fire underneath a deck outside a former restaurant in downtown Santa Barbara.

The blaze was reported shortly before 7 p.m. at 129 E. Anapamu St., across from the Santa Barbara Courthouse Sunken Garden, according to Battalion Chief Jim McCoy of the Santa Barbara City Fire Department.

The building formerly housed the Little Door Restaurant.

Crew arrived to find some old oak firewood burning underneath the deck, McCoy told Noozhawk.

“It’s lucky it was caught early in the evening,” McCoy said. “If it had been late at night, I’m sure the whole thing would have been burned down.”

Crews quickly doused the blaze before it could damage the deck or the adjacent structure, McCoy said.

Cause of the fire remained under investigation.
