Francisco Espinosa took first place in his weight class, leading the Dos Pueblos wrestling team to a sixth-place finish at the Newbury Park Invitational on Saturday.

Espinosa won at 106 pounds to lead five place finishers for the Chargers in their season opener. Sam Ramos placed second at 145 pounds, Shaun Vague was third at 132, Sylis Penniman took third at 182 and Ivan Medina came in seventh at heavyweight.

“All of the kids wrestled hard, and their wins in the tournament contributed to our overall standings,” said first-year coach and former DP wrestler Jesse Plowman.

He also cited the contributions of Ryan Risdall at 126 pounds, Ryan Crawford at 138 and Evan Garcia at 170.

“We scored 114 points total despite only bringing eight wrestlers out of 14 possible,” said Plowman. “League rival Buena eked out ahead of us in fifth with 118 points. We will see them on Tuesday for our first home match.”
