A 17-year-old girl was injured in a drive-by shooting on Wednesday afternoon, Lompoc police Sgt. Bryan Dillard said.

At approximately 3:15 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 700 block of West Walnut Avenue for a report of a possible drive-by shooting with one female wounded.

Officers found the 17-year-old victim with a single gunshot wound, and provided immediate first aid for her until Lompoc firefighters and medics arrived.

The girl, whose name was not released, was transported to Lompoc Valley Medical Center, where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect was described as a Hispanic male adult who was driving a gray sedan westbound on West Walnut Avenue when he fired one round at the victim.

“Based on the statements gathered through this investigation, the suspect shouted disparaging comments regarding a local street gang before opening fire at the victim, leading investigators to consider it a gang-related incident,” Dillard said.

The investigation into the shooting was continuing.
