Santa Ynez goalie Hale Durbiano stopped 16 Carpinteria shots, helping the Pirates beat the Warriors, 9-7, in a non-league game on Tuesday.
The Pirates played good defense in front of Durbiano. Ernesto Sotelo and Landon Lassahn each had four steals and Cristian Sotelo added three steals.
“Carpinteria had a couple of very strong players that we were able to double team and earn a lot of steals,” said Santa Ynez coach Jake Kalkowski. “Hale Durbiano’s play in goal was the X factor in the game. He was recovering from a sickness and came up big for his team when they needed it. When he gets going, the team rallies and everyone plays better.”
Lassahn led the Pirates (7-6) with four goals and Cooper Haws added three.
“The game was within a one-goal difference all the way into the fourth quarter with 3 minutes left in the game,” said Carpinteria coach Stephen Kim. “Both teams played good defense and it showed as the third quarter was scoreless.”
Leading the attack for Carpinteria was Asher Smith with four goal and Griffin Yamaoka with two.
