A hazardous-materials incident prompted emergency personnel to start evacuations east of Orcutt on Wednesday afternoon.

At approximately 1:30 p.m., Santa Barbara County firefighters, hazmat crews, and other emergency personnel were dispatched to an incident on the 3800 block of Telephone Road, Capt. Scott Safechuck said.

The incident reportedly involved a produce tank leaking hydrogen sulfide, or H2S, and led Santa Barbara County sheriff’s deputies to begin evacuating properties east of the address to Dominion Road, Safechuck said.

Firefighters determined the incident involved a low H2S release and levels, cancelling other personnel en route to assist.

They also canceled the evacuation order at approximately 3 p.m., Safechuck said.

The rural area includes a mixture of multiple ag businesses and some residences.
