An injured paraglider had to be hoisted into a helicopter from the Santa Ynez backcountry before being transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital on Friday afternoon.

Santa Barbara County firefighters were dispatched at 1:45 p.m. to a report of a paraglider down, Capt. Daniel Bertucelli said.

The injured man was located in the Cachuma Saddle area, east of Goat Rock, according to Bertucelli. He added that dispatchers initially were told that the incident occurred off Paradise Road.

Copter 308 from the Santa Barbara County Air Support Unit lowered a paramedic to the patient, who was treated and prepped for transportation.

The 42-year-old man was taken by Copter 308 to Cottage Hospital for treatment of critical injuries, Bertucelli said.

Additional details were not immedately available.
