Jaymi Coronado scored 23 points to pace the Bishop Diego girls basketball team to a 46-24 win over Santa Ynez in an opening pool-play game at the Santa Maria Tournament on Thursday.
Lara Henichen added 10 points for the Cardinals, who held Santa Ynez to three points in the fourth period.
“Jaymie did a great job of running the offense and finding the open spots to shoot or pass,” said coach Jeff Burich. “Lara’s 10 points helped take some pressure off the need to score. Citlali Morales, Karla Mayren and Jiali Coronado played great defense. As a team I thought I our rotations were really good this early in the year. It helps that most of these girls have played together for several years in grade school.”
Bishop (2-0) plays Valley Christian Academy on Friday.
Sade McMillian led Santa Ynez with 8 points and 7 rebounds, and freshman Helina Pecile had 6 points and 8 boards.
Santa Maria 54, Carpinteria 34
Junior Amarisse Camargo scored 18 points and freshman Jamaica Cool grabbed 11 rebounds for Carpinteria in a pool-play loss at the Santa Maria Tournament.
“We had several opportunities on offense that we did not convert and missed 9 free throws,” said coach Henry Gonzales of the season opener. “Couple that with too many turnovers, it’s difficult to overcome.”
The Warriors play Coast Union on Friday.
