John Sisterson earned his 400th win as a head soccer coach at Santa Barbara City College as his Vaquero women’s soccer team scored twice in the second half at Ventura to defeat the Pirates 3-1 in a Western State Conference game.
The victory marks Sisterson’s 400th win combined between both the men’s and women’s soccer programs.
SBCC women are now 9-2-5 overall and will head into this Friday’s matchup at second place Allan Hancock still with the best record in the WSC at 7-0-1.
“Tonight’s game was a battle,” said assistant coach Alex Zermeno. “Early in the first half, we had the momentum going our way after our goal in the first minute from Aly Springer that was assisted from theresa english, but unless you were there, you wouldn’t have seen the room Sophia Orozco made to create that opportunity.”
Springer scored for the third time this season, while English notched her team-leading sixth assist – twice as many as any of her teammates have this year.
After Ventura (7-7-3, 5-3) scored an equalizing goal, the momentum would shift late in the second half. The Vaqueros would get their second goal from Bella Loflin off a corner taken by Gizela Zermeno to regain the lead.
“We were very pleased on the set piece as we’ve been working on those week in and week out,” Zermeno said. “To see our girl Bella, who is one of the best arial threats on the team get one, it was amazing.”
Later on, a Theresa English counter found Madison Dodson running on the right channel, who scored SBCC’s third goal to silence Ventura’s momentum and seal the win.
SBCC’s big upcoming match at Allan Hancock is set for a 4:00 p.m. start this Friday, Oct. 28.
