Jordan Short had a big day on Friday, pouring in 28 points and grabbing 11 rebounds to lead Providence to a 49-37 boys basketball victory over Valley Christian Academy in Santa Maria.

The Patriots (2-0) led 21-19 at the half, then took control with an 18-9 run in the third quarter.

Zak Lopez had a fine all-around game with 15 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and five steals.

“Yes, we’re 2-0 but there are a lot of areas still to grow and develop on both ends of the floor,” said Providence coach Steve Stokes. “The growth from opening night to tonight was great. The guys are putting things together on both ends of the floor. We’re continuing to build brick-by-brick as we move forward.”

The Patriots will return to Santa Maria to take on the Santa Maria Saints on Monday at 4 p.m.
