Kai Morphy tossed in 26 points and Bishop Diego won a thriller on Friday, edging Hueneme 55-54 in overtime of a semifinal game at the Thacher Boys Basketball Tournament.

The Cardinals will play for the championship on Saturday at 3 p.m. against the winner of Thacher and Nordhoff.

“We did some good things and we had some mental breakdowns that kept them in it, but we’ll take the win,” said Cardinals coach James Coronado. “I couldn’t be more proud of our guys, playing with only eight players, two of whom were call ups from JV. We made enough plays to get the win. I have to give a shout-out to sophomore call up, Anthony Villa. He came in like his hair was on fire and provided a huge spark that helped us win the game.

“Kai Morphy led the offense and Marcus Chan ran the team efficiently, getting us into our offense and scoring a timely seven points. Hueneme sent the game into overtime with an inbounds tip in, then down by two late in the OT, freshman Luis Fernandez hit a kick-out 3 from Chan that put us ahead for good.

“Marcus does a lot of things that don’t jump out at you on the stat sheet, but anyone who knows the game, sees how important the plays are that he makes for our team.”
