The Cate School girls defended their Tri-County Athletic Association title and the boys finished a close second to Thacher on Thursday.

The girls won their third TCAA title in four years, excluding the lost Covid season.

Senior Kendall Thorne led the way for the Rams, placing second in 21:05, followed by sophomore Francesca Sutch in third, 21:11.

Senior Lylie Bechtel was next in fourth place with 21:14, freshman Jen Won fifth, 21:22; sophomore Maddie Patrick eighth, 21:54; senior Emily Allison 11th, 22:14; and freshman Coco Kliman 14th, 22:23.

All seven of those runners received All League honors, five on the First Team All League and two on the Second Team.

“The girls have been battling illness and injury all season,” Cate girls coach Hannah Solis-Cohen said. “They started to get healthy last week for the county meet and finished third. This was another set towards their goal in qualifying for the State Finals in Fresno for the second straight year.

“When they run in a tight group like they did today, they are tough to beat.”

The Cate boys team lost in a very tight race to Thacher by two points. Their second place finish is the best finish in recent memory. Foothill Tech finished third in the race.

Juniors Everest Schipper and Seb Sutch finished second and third, crossing the finish line in the same time, 17:16. Senior Harry Mc Adams had his best race of the season, finishing fifth in 17:53.

All three received First team All League honors. Oliver Lee,17th, 18:40, and Caden Fuchs, 18th, 18:41, ran very strong races to keep the Rams in contention.

“The boys continue to improve with each race,” first year boys coach Tim Weir said. “We are so proud of the hard work they have put in at practices and how much they have grown in understanding how to race. We feel they are just hitting their stride and we look forward to the opportunities at Mt. SAC next week.”

The varsity girls and boys will compete next Friday in the CIF-SS D5 Prelim meet at Mt. SAC.
