Quarterback Spencer Hlavaty combined with Gabe Lea on a two touchdown passes, and the Laguna Blanca defense turned in a solid performance in a 22-12 season-opening win in an 8-man football game on Saturday.
The defense, led by James Couvillion and Carson Stewart, held Orcutt Academy scoreless in the first half, while Hlavaty hit Lea on a 22-yard score for the only points of the half.
The passing combination hooked up again on a 15-yard TD in the fourth quarter.
The Owls’ offensive line opened a hole for running back Dylan Comis, and he burst through for a 45-yard touchdown run that sealed the win.
“These guys came out fast and physical,” said coach Matt Escobar. “Every person on our team contributed to this win. That’s one of my favorite things about this team, everyone is key to our success, everyone is mentally prepared.
“It was good to see these guys establish a run game throughout the game and really be able to finish the game together by pounding the rock.”
The Owls play again on Friday at Animo Robinson in Los Angeles.
