Laguna Blanca opened the season with a 3-0 home win over Carpinteria Friday, with scores of 25-20, 25-22, 25-22.
Ganden Walker led the Owls with eight kills, while Kincade Avery and Freddie Russell had seven apiece. Avery had zero errors and a .778 percentage.
“It was a good first match for us,” Laguna Blanca coach Jason Donnelly said. “We got out some early jitters and played pretty steady for the duration of the match. Thomas Couvillion had five kills and played very consistently in the back. He had a couple of nice service runs to help us separate.”
Joaquin Gonzalez led the Warrios with 10 kills, and Ty Wilson added five blocks. Sebastian McCurry had 26 digs.
“Laguna Blanca was having a great night and we were not,” Carpinteria coach Mickey Caughey said. “We had too many missed serves and too many hitting errors. If not for all the errors, the results could have been reversed. It’s not to take anything away from Laguna Blanca, because they have a very good team with solid players in all positions.”
Both teams face busy schedules next week. Laguna Blanca plays at St. Bonaventure Tuesday, at home against Cate on Thursday and head to the Chadwick Tournament next Saturday.
Carpinteria plays home games against Ventura on Tuesday, Pacifica on Thursday, and Foothill Tech on Friday, all of the with 5 p.m. starts.
