Laguna Blanca defeated Bishop Diego, 25-17, to take fifth place at the Chadwick Boys Volleyball Tournament on Saturday.

Freddie Russell paced the Owls throughout the tournament, compiling 36 kills and seven blocks. He was named to the all-tournament team.

Laguna Blanca went 1-2 in pool play, beating Whitney in straight sets (25-23, 25-15) and losing to St. Margaret’s in two (25-17, 25-12) and Bishop Montgomery in three (25-20, 17-25, 16-14).

“Overall, it was a great learning day for our squad,” said coach Jason Donnelly. “We struggled early on, making a bunch of unforced errors. We had a chance to beat Bishop Montgomery in pool play but let it slip away. We gained some valuable experience today and the guys got better.”

Donnelly said Miles Sedlin had a consistent overall day at the libero position. “His effort on defense was solid and his serve-receive passing allowed us to keep our middles involved all day long.”

Senior setter Jack Shiebler had 75 assists on the day.

Laguna hosts Foothill Tech on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
