Leo Metzger of San Marcos finished his brilliant high school golf career by finishing in a tie for 21st at the Southern California Golf Association/CIF Regional Tournament at the par-74 Los Serranos Golf Club.
Metzger, who led the Royals to the CIF-SS Division 2 team championship, shot a 1-over 73 and missed advancing to the CIF State Championships in Pebble Beach by two shots. His round included an eagle on the 520-yard, par-5 second hole and birdies on Nos. 3, 13 and 16.
The UC Davis-bound Metzger, a two-time Channel League individual champion, was the only local golfer to qualify for the regionals.
He will next defend his Santa Barbara City Golf Championship over Memorial Day weekend at the Santa Barbara Golf Club.
Colin Li of team qualifier Torrey Pines won the SCGA/CIF Regional with an 8-under 66. There were three team and nine individual qualifiers for the State Championships. The teams qualifiers were Tesoro, Torrey Pines and Oaks Christian.
