Junior Leo Metzger made seven birdies en route to a 6-under par 64 to lead the San Marcos boys golf team to a 363-458 win over Buena in a season-opening non-league match at Santa Barbara Golf Club on Wednesday.

Metzger’s round was his best in a high school competition, according to coach Jeff Ashton.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better way to start the season today,” said Metzger. “I’m really proud of all of our guys, especially our two freshmen (Brody Ricci and Himmat Singh) who made their high school debuts.

“I’m really excited about the way I played today, shooting my best round in a high school match so far.  Buena had some strong players and were a fun to team to play against.  I can’t wait for the rest of the season.”

Shams Jahangir-Arshad of the Royals made three birdie putts and also finished under par, carding a 2-under 68. Jeffrey Forster had a 71.

Buena’s Adam Andeson fired a 1-under 69.
