Dos Pueblos’ Lily Mires scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Chargers held off a stubborn Lompoc squad to take a 56-50 win Tuesday to open the Channel League season.
Dos Pueblos opened a 14 point lead late in the game, but the Braves kept coming back to stay within striking distance. Leila Chisholm got a steal and a lay-in to bring the margin back to 10, but Lompoc closed again.
“Lompoc likes to post up and get the ball inside,” Dos Pueblos coach Phil Sherman said. “Lily blocked six shots and contested many more to disrupt their game plan.”
Mires also contributed four assists.
“Lily has continued to contribute mightily on many different levels,” Sherman said.
Charger sophomore Lia Papador scored 14 points and had seven rebounds.
“We are a much better team when Lia plays aggressively on offense. She is a force to be reckoned with,” Sherman said.
Sophomore Justine Katz had seven rebounds and seven assists for the Chargers, breaking the Lompoc press consistently.
With Covid disrupting the team and coaching staff, the Chargers held their first full scrimmage in three weeks Saturday.
Dos Pueblos is 1-0 in Channel League play, and Lompoc falls to 0-2. DP is 11-2 overall.
