Lily Simolon started her senior year with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Bishop Diego girls basketball team to a season-opening 52-17 win over Nordhoff on Monday night.

Galilea De La Cruz added 10 points for the Cardinals, who had three new starters in the lineup.

“We did a great job sharing the ball tonight, making six 3-point shots,” said coach Jeff Burich “I liked how we settled down defensively in the second half and did a better job not reaching. We got lazy and had too many fouls in the first half.”

Burich said Simolon did a good job attacking the basket off the dribble and crashing the boards.

“I liked how we played tonight and look forward to the rest of the week,” he said.

The Cardinals play Thursday against Santa Ynez in the Santa Maria Tournament.
