The Lompoc Public Library System’s 2019 Summer Reading Program was one for the record books. This summer’s program broke the previous records for attendance, including sign-ups, programs attended and books read.
The total attendance for programs and events held for the 2019 Summer Reading Program themed It’s Showtime at your Library that ran June 1 through Aug. 3 was 5,841. That attendance number marks a 58.9 percent increase over last year’s 3,676.
There were 149 programs and events held for It’s Showtime, including Lunch at the Library, sponsored by the Lompoc Unified School District; as well as classes, parties, shows, and craft days at the Lompoc main branch and Vandenberg Village branch libraries.
The Charlotte’s Web Mobile Children’s Library held the Graphic Novel Book Club with 74 children participating. Participants received an in-person visit from Goleta author and cartoonist Dana Simpson, who created the popular graphic novel series Phoebe and Her Unicorn.
In addition, 13,581 books were read as part of the Summer Reading Program that was available to kids through adults of all ages. The total number of books read last year was 10,154, marking a 33.8 percent increase. Total reading signups for It’s Showtime was 2,223 this summer; up 9 percent from last year’s 2,043 signups.
Sarah Bleyl, Lompoc Library System director, said the program continues to become more successful each year thanks to the community’s support.
