Major injuries were reported in a head-on collision Sunday afternoon on Highway 154 near Santa Barbara.

The crash involving a sedan and a small SUV occurred shortly before 1:30 p.m. about a mile north of Cathedral Oaks Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Three people were injured — one critically and two with moderate injuries, according to Capt. Daniel Bertucelli of the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

Major extrication was required to free at least one patient from the wreckage.

The victims were transported by American Medical Response ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

Their names and details on their conditions were not available.

The highway was shut down for a time in the area of the crash, which was under investigation by the CHP.
