A man was killed and two other people were seriously injured in a crash that required extrication Thursday afternoon in the Santa Ynez Valley.

At approximately 3:45 p.m., Santa Barbara County firefighters, California Highway Patrol officers and American Medical Response ambulance crews were dispatched to northbound Highway 101, south of Jonata Park Road, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

A Honda Odyssey minivan was northbound in the left lane when it slammed into the back of a Toyota Tundra that was stopped on the highway, according to CHP officer Michael Griffith.

The Tundra was propelled into the center median, where it overturned, Griffith said.

The Odyssey then collided with the rear of a third vehicle that was stopped in the right-hand lane, before overturning and coming to rest up an embankment.

The driver and lone occupant of a silver SUV died from injuries suffered in the crash, fire Capt. Scott Safechuck said.

His name was not released pending notification of relatives.

Vikki Havly, 67, of Oak View, a passenger in the Tundra, was transported by AMR ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with major injuries after being extricated from the wreckage, Griffith said.

The Tundra driver, George Clig, 65, of Oak View, suffered moderate injuries, and also was taken to Cottage Hospital.

Details on their conditions were not available.

The driver of the third vehicle, Mark Robles, 39, of Santa Maria, refused medical care, he added.

Traffic on Highway 101 was affected by the crash cleanup and investigation.
