One person was in custody and another was being sought after a shooting incident early New Year’s Day in downtown Santa Barbara.

Officers responded about 2:40 a.m. to an apartment in the 300 block of West Micheltorena Street after receiving several reports of shots fired, according to Anthony Wagner, a spokesman with the Santa Barbara Police Department.

The incident began with a verbal altercation between the two men, Wagner said, and it escalated when one man brandished a weapon.

The other man then pulled out a firearm and fired two shots into the air, Wagner said, adding that no one was injured.

The first man fled the scene while the man with the gun barricaded himself inside the apartment, Wagner said.

Officers established a perimeter around the apartment building, and they eventually took the man into custody after deploying the department’s armored Bearcat vehicle, Wagner said.

The man with the gun, whose name was not immediately available, faces multiple firearms and drug charges, Wagner said.

The man who fled remained at large Wednesday afternoon, Wagner said.

A bag containing drugs reportedly was dropped out the window of the apartment, but that could not be confirmed.
