A man was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon when he was assaulted on the city’s Eastside, according to the Santa Barbara Police Department.

At about 4:45 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 300 block of North Milpas Street, where they found the victim, who had suffered serious injuries in the attack, said Anthony Wagner, a police spokesman.

The nature of the man’s injuries were not disclosed, but witnesses told Noozhawk he suffered a serious stab wound to the chest.

The victim was taken by AMR ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

His name and condition were not available, although Wagner said he was “conscious and alert.”

Although emergency personnel responded to Milpas Street, witnesses told Noozhawk that the assault occurred at the Eastside Neighborhood Park at Soledad and Yanonali streets, and the victim walked to his place of employment.

Officers were scouring the area looking for a suspect, Wagner said, adding that the investigation was ongoing.

He could not say whether the assault was believed to be gang-related.
