Matthew Cunningham carried the offensive load for the Bishop Diego boys basketball team, pouring in 37 points in a 67-63 non-league road victory at Santa Ynez on Wednesday night.

The Cardinals took a 49-41 lead into the fourth quarter and held off surging Santa Ynez in the final eight minutes.

“Give credit to those guys, every time we got a cushion, they kept roaring back and making plays,” said Bishop coach James Coronado of the Pirates. “It was a great win for our young team. Earlier in the season, we might’ve found a way to lose this game. Now we are finding ways to win, which is great heading down the stretch.”

Bryan Trejo added eight points and made some timely plays on defense.

Bishop improves to 15-10.
