A motorcyclist and his passenger were critically injured Sunday afternoon in a collision with a car on Highway 246 in the Santa Ynez Valley, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

The crash occurred at about 4:30 p.m. west of Highway 154, near the Gainey Vineyard and the Santa Ynez Airport, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The male rider and his female passenger both suffered major injuries when the motorcycle collided with a Honda sedan, said Mike Eliason, a Fire Department spokesman.

The victims were transported by American Medical Response ambulance to the Santa Ynez Airport, then flown to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital via a Calstar medical helicopter and the county’s Copter 4, Eliason said.

Their identities and details on their conditions were not available.

The driver of the car, whose name also was not available, was not hurt, Eliason said.

The CHP is investigating the circumstances of the collision.
