The Carpinteria boys, ranked third in CIF-SS Division 5, won their initial Citrus Coast League match over Malibu in four sets Thursday, 25-19, 24-26, 27-25, 25-21.

That’s despite missing 15 serves and getting aced five times, Warrior coach  Mickey Caughey said.

“Once again we were saved by our defense, with 124 team digs,” Caughey said.

Sebastian McCurry led in digs with 37, followed by Diesel Slade with 31 and Zach Isaac with 24.

“And we were able to convert a lot of those digs into kills with a team total of 37 kills on the night,” Caughey said. Slade had 12 kills, Joaquin Gonzalez had 10 kills and River Taff had 6 kills and 3 blocks.

The Warriors are now 6-2 overall and 1-0 in CCL play. They play in the Dos Pueblos Invitational Tournament Saturday among a mix of Division 1/2, 3, 4 and 5.

“As a Division 5 team, we will have our work cut out for us,” Caughey said. “We are looking forward to testing ourselves against all the big teams. It should be fun!”

Santa Ynez 3, Cabrillo 0

Santa Ynez’s Grant Fieldhouse had 11 kills and two digs in a Pirates sweep of Cabrillo in a Channel match Thursday, by scores of 25-17, 25-18, 25-21

Nick Fieldhouse added seven kills and three digs for Santa Ynez. Isaac Swolgaard four kills and an ace and Diego Torres four kills and a block.
