UCSB gave up six runs in the third inning and never recovered, losing to 25th-ranked Oregon State, 11-0, in eight innings in the concluding game of the Sanderson Ford College Baseball Classic in Surprise,Arizona.
The Gauchos went 2-2 in the season-opening event.
Oregon State banged out seven hits and capitalized on a Gaucho throwing error to score six runs and take an 8-0 lead. The Beavers scored two runs in the first inning on four hits and an error.
UCSB wasted scoring chances in the top of the first and second innings. The Gauchos had two on with one out in the first, but Oregon State starter AJ Lattery struck out Broc Mortensen and Leo Mosby to end the threat.
In the second, UCSB stranded Jared Stundstrom at third base and Aaron Parker at first as Lattery got Corey Nunez to hit into a double play.
Lattery was lifted after four innings and Ian Lawson came in and held the Gauchos hitless and struck out six over the next three innings. He picked up the win.
UCSB starter Tyler Bremner suffered the loss in his collegiate debut. The Beavers scored eight runs on 10 hits in two innings against the true freshman from San Diego.
The Gauchos are scheduled to play their home opener Friday against Oregon at 5:15 p.m.
