From conceptual diagrams to more technical renderings\, this class will explore a variety of ways to communicate and improve our designs. Participants in this workshop will produce bubble\, cross-sectional\, and plan diagrams as well as perspective renderings. We will cover use cases for each graphical category\, as well as techniques for success.\n\n\nNo previous art background is required\, but a growth mindset and desire to improve your skills are required.\n\n\nAlthough the Garden is dog-friendly\, only service animals are permitted at this Garden classes (or event).\n\n\nPricing:\nGarden Members & Students with Valid ID: $15\n\n \n\n\nGeneral Public: $30\n\n\nAbout Scot Pipkin:\nScot Pipkin holds a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Arizona (2012). While he still thinks he’s “not a great artist\,” Scot uses graphics and his “design brain” for tasks that go well beyond garden design.

This class will help you learn and refine your plant identification skills as we go over the characteristics that unite some of the most commonly found plant families in backyards\, nurseries\, and at the Garden! Living Collections Curator Christina Varnava will show you how to identify eight commonly encountered native plant families and discuss some of the more famous members of these families. We will also discuss some horticultural practices to help you learn how to make these plants thrive at home.\n\n\nThe class will begin with an overview of eight commonly grown CA native plant families and relevant horticultural practices\, followed by a long walk in the Garden for some hands-on identification. No botanical experience or special equipment is necessary.\n\n\nPricing:\nGarden Members and Students: $15\n\n\nGeneral Public: $30\n\n \n\n\nAbout the Instructor:\nChristina Varnava is the Living Collections Curator at Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. These records are the key to unlocking the unique stories of the plants in the Garden and they also support the vital research and conservation of California native plants.\n\n\nChristina studied botany and received a Master’s of Science from Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden and Claremont Graduate University. For her master’s research she worked on a floristic study of the Upper Sespe Creek watershed in the Los Padres National Forest (Ventura County\, CA)\, This project gave her invaluable experience with plant identification and an abiding love for the chaparral habitats of Southern California

SUMMARY:Anacapa Island Day Trip Hosted by Santa Barbara Botanic Garden
DESCRIPTION:Details:\nJoin us for a guided walking tour of Anacapa Island with the Garden’s Horticulture Educator Alejandro Lemus. We will travel via Island Packers boat across the channel where you may see a variety of aquatic wildlife on the way to the island. The boat docks at the East End Landing Cove at the base of the high bluffs. We will climb a few rungs of ladder that leads to the dock\, then climb the steps (157 of them!) to the island’s plateau-like terrain. While we are on the island we may see Northern Island Malva Rose\, coastal gumplant\, island deerweed\, and sand-lettuce – examples of the flora that make our islands the California Galapagos.\n\n\nOur group will meet at the Ventura Harbor at 9:15am to prepare for the Island Packers boat to depart at 10:00am. For the return trip the boat will depart from the island at 4:00pm to arrive at Ventura Harbor at approximately 5:30pm. The boat trip will take approximately 2-3 hours each way.\n\n\nAdditional information for directions to the harbor and preparation for the trip will be sent after guests register for this trip.\n\n\nPricing:\nGarden Members: $130\n\n \n\n\nGeneral Public: $145\n\n\nAbout Alejandro Lemus:\nAlejandro was born and raised in Los Angeles. Growing up\, he assisted his parents with their landscaping business. Some of his earliest memories are of looking at flowers\, finding insects in the leaves\, and spending many hours in the garden with his family. Alejandro has experience in habitat restoration\, horticulture\, and education. As the Garden’s Horticultural Educator\, he is passionate about connecting people with native plants.
