It has taken nearly two years, but the Montecito Creek bridge at Parra Grande Lane will reopen Friday afternoon, according to the California Department of Transportation.

Both lanes of the new Montecito Creek Bridge, which is on Highway 192/East Valley Road, will open around 1 p.m., Caltrans spokesman Jim Shivers said.

The bridge was destroyed in the Jan. 9, 2018 debris flows, and five others along Highway 192 were damaged or destroyed in the storm.

“The (Montecito Creek Bridge) opening means the entire corridor is open,” Shivers said. The newest bridge will stay open to traffic while Caltrans finishes up some more work at the site, he added.

Construction and the road closure has been ongoing since January 2018.

The Arroyo Paredon Creek Bridge was completed in May, the Romero Canyon Bridge and Toro Canyon Bridge were open in January, and the San Ysidro Creek Bridge was finished in April.

There is construction still at the Toro Canyon Bridge to finish the widening and allow two-way traffic, Shivers noted.

Also in Montecito, the Santa Barbara County Public Works Department has been repaving the road at the Hot Springs/Olive Mill roads intersection, known as the triangle.

Crews plan to wrap up by Friday, weather permitting, Public Works spokesman Lael Wageneck said.

This area was one of the most devastated areas in Montecito during the debris flows.
