A man was killed early Friday when he was struck by a big-rig truck as he was attempting to run across Highway 101 in Santa Barbara, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision occurred at about 1:15 a.m. in the southbound freeway lanes near the Garden Street exit, said CHP Officer Jonathan Gutierrez.

The victim, a 21-year-old Oak Park man, was hit while he was in the right-hand lane, Gutierrez said. The man was declared dead at the scene.

The big-rig tractor, which was not hauling a trailer at the time, was driven by Charles C. Hudson, 56, of Loma Linda, who was not injured.

It is unknown if alcohol and/or drugs were a factor in this collision, Gutierrez said.

The victim’s name was not released pending notification of relatives.
