A female pedestrian was struck by an Amtrak train and killed near Santa Barbara on Friday afternoon, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.
Witnesses saw a person jump from a train overpass on Hollister Avenue near Modoc Road into the train’s path, according to emergency radio traffic, but that could not immediately be confirmed.
The victim was declared dead at the scene, said Raquel Zick, sheriff’s spokeswoman.
The incident involved a northbound Amtrak Coast Starlight train.
Santa Barbara County firefighters, sheriff’s deputies and an AMR ambulance responded to the scene at 1:13 p.m.
Train traffic was stopped in the area, according to Santa Barbara County Fire Capt. Daniel Bertucelli.
The victim’s name was not released pending notification of relatives.
Law enforcement was continuing to investigate the incident, Bertucelli said.
