During the era of distance learning, Peoples’ Self-Help Housing (PSHH) is enhancing and expanding the education program at its Santa Maria property Los Adobes de Maria II.
The property’s onsite learning center is undergoing a renovation and has widened its education programming with more services to support students during distance learning.
“As students across the country are struggling with the transition to distance learning, we are doing everything we can to support our students and ease the burden on parents,” said Alejandra Mahoney, who has led PSHH’s educational programs expansion over the past decade.
“We hope to continue expanding the scope and capacity of our learning centers to meet this new need, ” said Joanna Dominguez, incoming director of education for PSHH.
The learning center renovations were made possible by a $245,000 Community Development Block Grant by the city of Santa Maria. The grant is allowing PSHH to upgrade the building’s interior flooring, lighting, cabinets, appliances, and restrooms, as well as make timely repairs on the exterior.
The grant will also cover the cost of a new play structure for the learning center for students to enjoy when they are back in the classroom. The renovation is estimated to be complete in early 2021.
In addition to the renovations, PSHH will be opening a new Academic Success Center, which will provide individualized support for students as they participate in virtual learning with their school. Educators are available during the school day, providing technology assistance, homework support, and coordination with area school districts.
