A 51-year-old man died of his injuries after a stabbing early Wednesday morning in southeast Santa Maria.

Shortly after midnight, Santa Maria police officers and other emergency personnel were dispatched to the 700 block of East Betteravia Road regarding a stabbing victim who was bleeding and in distress, Sgt. Todd Logan said. 

Officers found the man had been assaulted and had major injuries. He was transported by an American Medical Response ambulance to Marian Regional Medical Center where he died due to his injuries a short time later, police said. 

The name of the victim will not be released until his family members have been notified. .

No arrests have been made and detectives were continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to the stabbing, Logan added.

“SMPD detectives are aggressively pursuing leads in this case but are asking for the public’s assistance,” Logan added. 

Police have asked that anyone who may have been in the area at the time or witnessed the events in this case to call Detective Seann Woessner in the Police Department Detective Bureau at 805.928.3781, ext. 1929.
