SANTA YNEZ GIRLS LOSE IN OVERTIME

Santa Ynez’s top scorer Nayeli Torres was contained by Santa Maria’s defense in a 43-37 loss by the Pirates in overtime.

“They shut down Nayeli, and the other four starters had to battle on their own,” said coach Jennifer Rasmussen. “I’m proud of our continued improvement, but we can’t win a game with turnover after turnover.”

Giszelle Hrehor hauled in 22 rebounds to go with eight points, three assists and two blocked shots for the Pirates. Hally Maniscalco had eight points and eight rebounds.

Rasmussen praised the play of freshman Jay Brandford, who came off the bench to replace an injured Jadyn Gardner.

“She hustled to get a few key steals that got us to overtime,” said the coach.
