Providence erased a five-point halftime deficit and held Cuyama Valley to 14 points en route to a 47-40 victory in CIF-SS Division 5A wild-card boys basketball playoff game on Tuesday at Cate’s Gym.

Diego Godinez, shown from an earlier game, had seven points, seven rebounds and five assists in a CIF 5A wild-card win over Cuyama Valley.

The win sends the Patriots into a first-round game at Southlands Christian on Wednesday.

Caleb Song led Providence with 19 points and had five assists, Jonny Saunders scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Diego Godinez had seven points, seven rebounds and five assists.

“We struggled to get in a groove in the first half and made a lot of mistakes,” said Providence coach Micah Ruiz. “But I’m really proud of the way these young men responded. They bought in and played their hearts out in the second half. I’m so happy to get these seniors a playoff win.”

The Patriots outscored the Bears 17-6 in the final quarter.
