The Providence girls advanced to the CIF-SS Division 4 quarterfinals with a 12-6 win over Valley View Friday.
The Patriots play Pacifica Christian Monday in the quarterfinal round.
“I am so proud of these girls!” Providence coach Chris Elwood said. “I challenged them to get off to a fast start by doing all the little things right: first serve percentage, return of serve percentage, first volleys, and we just shot out of the gates like Flash Gordon. With our full squad intact, the Lady Patriots got off to a stellar start by sweeping the first round of play.
Elwood said the day’s highlight was Avala Elwood coming back from a 2-5 deficit, saving two set points, and prevailing 7-5 against Valley View’s top player.
Avala Elwood went on to win her second set 6-0 before being subbed out.
Other highlights included Sarah Monroy securing the win by sweeping her three sets 6-0, 6-1, 6-4. The Patriots’ No. 1 doubles team of Jane Krautmann and Mia Vandever won two sets, 6-2, 6-0 before subbing out, and the freshman duo of Amber Regan and Annie Haugen won two of three sets.
“This was a total team effort, with every starter scoring a point!” Chris Elwood said.
