In a crosstown showdown for the Channel League boys team golf title, defending champion San Marcos made it three championships in row by beating Dos Pueblos, 392-413, at a windy Sandpiper Golf Club on Tuesday.
Senior and UC Davis-bound Leo Metzger and junior Shams Jahangir-Arshad of the Royals each shot even-par 72 to share medalist honors.
Teddy Vigna was the low scorer for Dos Pueblos at 2-over 74.
This was the league team finale for both teams. San Marcos finishes at 7-0 (10-1 overall) and Dos Pueblos at 6-1 (10-2).
San Marcos coach Jeff Ashton said it was the last high school match for Metzger. He’ll now be playing in individual and team tournaments.

“He has been such a steady player and leader for us over the past four years, and we knew we had our hands full today with a very talented and young DP team,” said Ashton. “I don’t think the team scores were as low as either coach or team thought they should be, but it was a very high pressure match on a tough golf course.
“I’m proud of the boys for grinding through bad shots, bad holes, and tough breaks to get the win today and be Channel League champions for the third year in a row.”
Metzger thanked Ashton for his coaching.
“Today was my last high school match, and while I’m excited for the future, high school golf will always hold a special place in my heart, ” he said. “I’m grateful for Coach Ashton, who has mentored me throughout my four years.
“He has made me a better player and a better person. I am also thankful for my teammates who’ve made these four years unforgettable. Despite not having our best day, I’m proud of everyone for bringing home Channel League for a third straight year. “
Metzger said he’ll be playing in CIF competition.
Jahangir-Arshad said he was proud how the Royals played on a tough windy day to beat a strong DP team.
“I’m happy with the way I played bouncing back from a double on hole 11 to finish strong and go 2 under on my last 7 holes,” he said.
“I really enjoyed playing against Dos Pueblos in a high intensity match and I can’t wait to play the again next season,” said Holdt Gore. “We all really respect them as a team.”
Vigna’s round included five birdies. Scott Nightingale finished his round with a long birdie putt on 18 to card an 84.
“I want to commend the Dos Pueblos players on all of their hard work this season and preparing for this match,” said coach Kevin Ahlers. “We hope to make an at-large bid in the Division 1 CIF team competition, and hope to have multiple players score well at Channel League Individuals.”
