Balanced scoring and a solid defensive effort sparked San Marcos to an impressive 64-37 win over Rancho Cucamonga in a first-round game in the Silver Division at the prestigous Damien Classic boys basketball tournament in LaVerne on Thursday.

John Connolly scored 17 points and was a force at the defensive end for the Royals. Isaiah Hicks added 11 points and Max Shelton contributed 10.

“Gideon Van Bogelen did a great job bringing energy off the bench and our guys did a good job stepping for the guys we have out due to being sick,” coach Jelani Hicks said.

The Royals turned up the defensive pressure and pulled away in the third quarter.

“We allowed them less than 15 points in the second half,” said Hicks.

San Marcos is back in action against La Cañada for its second-round game.
