Masato Perera returned to the San Marcos boys tennis lineup and swept two sets without losing a game in the Royals’ 17-1 boys tennis win over Santa Barbara High on Friday.
Perera was coming off playing in two major youth tournaments in San Diego.
“It’s crazy to say this, but Masa has improved so much in the past year,” said San Marcos coach Jarrod Bradley. “His first serve is more powerful and consistent, and he dictates points from the baseline while coming for easy volleys more frequently.”
The Royals swept all nine singles points and lost only one doubles set.
In doubles, San Marcos was led by sophomore twins Joey and Charlie Friedman ,who swept their sets 6-1, 6-1.
“Their games complement each other well because they know how to set each other up for easy points. Joey generates incredible spin on his shots while Charlie has some of the best volleying skills I’ve seen in my 21 years coaching,” said Bradley.
The Royals will play at Dos Pueblos on Wednesday in a showdown of undefeated Channel League teams.
