A four-member team of sailors from San Marcos High took first place at the Pacific Coast Interscholastic Sailing Association’s National Invitational Girls’ Regatta at San Diego’s Mission Bay last week.

The two-person crew of Zoey Ziskind and Hope Campbell won the A Division fleet while the duo Catalina Matlock-Klein and Carly Keiding captured the B Division.

Ziskind/Campbell won two of the six races and finished second in two others. Keiding/Matlock-Kleins captured three races and had two seconds and a third.

The Royals finished ahead of Point Loma High in the 28-team competition. The teams sailed in CFJ boats.

“I was lucky to coach such a great team,” said coach Jon Ziskind. “The two things that stood out the most was resiliency and learning.

“Zoey and Hope had a tough set on day 2 and bounced right back to win the A Division. Carly and Catalina were studying the race course the entire time and learning. They made the necessary changes and adapted to win B.”
