BISHOP DIEGO FALLS IN 4AA SECOND ROUND
A hot-shooting Heritage girls basketball team defeated Bishop Diego, 77-52, in a CIF-SS Division 4AA second-round game on Wednesday at the Brick House.
“We ran into a hot-shooting team tonight that made eight threes,” said Bishop Diego coach Jeff Burich.
The Cardinals trailed 37-30 at halftime and cut the lead to six points in the middle of the third quarter.
But Heritage went on a surge and pulled away.
“They caught fire and beat us in transition a couple of times and the game got away from us in the last quarter and a half,” said Burich.
Lily Simolon and Clara McDonald each scored 12 points to lead Bishop Diego (11-10).
“I thought Lily played really well. She brought the energy needed for a playoff game,” said Burich.
He praised the play of point guard Sonia Mancuso, who faced heavy pressure.
“They were hounding Sonia Mancuso but she did a great job passing and driving against their press,” said Burich. “Once they stopped pressing because we were scoring against it their half-court man (defense) really made us work.
“We had opportunities but shots that we needed to fall just didn’t go in enough for us.”
The future is bright for Bishop as there are no seniors on the squad.
“We don’t have any seniors, so it was learning experience that we hope to build upon for next year,” said Burich.
