Becca Rodriguez scored two first-half goals, lifting San Marcos to a 4-3 win over Hillcrest in a CIF-SS Division 5 second-round girls soccer match in Riverside on Friday.

The 12-0 Royals advance to a Tuesday quarterfinal game at Marshall in Pasadena.

Ashley Mendoza and Evony Diaz tallied second-half goals to stave off Hillcrest.

“It was a really tough place to play,” said San Marcos coach Brian “Ziggy” Ziegenhagen. “It was our first CIF away game and it’s never easy going to someone else’s home and fighting for the win. It wasn’t our best performance, but the girls showed some real resilience and determination throughout the whole game to stay focused achieve our objective.”

Rodriguez opened the scoring in the fifth minute. She received a pass from Paige Ingram, beat a defender and tucked the ball past the goalkeeper.  Rodriguez struck again in the 15th minute.

Mendoza scored the third goal, pouncing on a loose ball in the box and putting it away.

Diaz’s goal was the result of a crossing ball that a Hillcrest defender misdirected into her own goal.

Ziegenhagen said the Royals got the result without playing their best game.

“Sometimes it’s good to shake off a bad game and still get the results you want. It keeps the team humble and it reminds us that we have to constantly work hard and earn our place as champions.”
