San Marcos split games Saturday on the final day of the Newport Invitational, finishing in 6th place in the elite event.

The Royals started with a convincing 18-3 win against Carlsbad in the 5th-8th place semifinal. Nearly all players scored in the team effort.

“I thought in the Carlsbad game Marina Brown played some good minutes and had three goals and several impactful defensive moments,” San Marcos coach Chuckie Roth said. He also said Mia Amberger had a great game.

In the 5th-place game, San Marcos fell to Mater Dei, 7-5. Ava Stryker scored three goals, and Madison Sparre and Sophia Panossian had one apiece.

The game was tied at 5 apiece going into the fourth quarter, with the Monarchs pulling the game out in the last couple of minutes.

“In regards to the Mayer Dei game, I really love my team and we will

get better from this,” Roth said. “My goalie Elaia Hamilton made some big plays and our whole team played with a lot of heart. It was a great weekend of getting better and having fun together.”

The invitational, at Newport Harbor High School, brought together six of the top seven ranked teams in CIF-Southern Section Division 1, including the Royals, tied for 6th. The event also included two teams from CIF-San Diego Section, including Carlsbad.
