Riley O’Brien earned her third match medalist honor of the season and led the San Marcos girls golf team to a 237-292 non-league win over Royal on Monday at the River Ridge Lake Course in Oxnard.
Riley shot a 46 to lead San Marcos’ five scorers under 50 for nine holes.
“The girls played well and posted solid scores that continue to show depth and consistency,” said coach Sarah Ashton.
Fia Torrey was second on the team with a 47, followed by Stella Ashamalla and Evelina Erickson at 48 and Campbell Thayer at 49.
San Marcos is 9-1 on the season.
Santa Ynez 272, Righetti 276
Mackenzie Phelan of the Pirates was the match medalist with a score of 46 at the Alisal River Course.
BOYS WATER POLO
Santa Ynezs held Cabrillo scoreless in two quarters en route to a 13-5 win in a CCAA Mountain League game on Monday.
Landon Lassahn scored four goals and Cristian Sotelo added three to the lead the offense.
Goalie Hale Durbiano had eight saves, six steals and three assists.
Dos Pueblos 12, La Serna 11
Brody Luke had a solid game for the Chargers with five goals, two assists and three steals on Saturday in a win over the No 4-ranked team in CIF-SS Division 2.
Jaden Moore also scored five goals and had a pair of steals.
Dos Pueblos played a strong defensive game in the second half, holding La Serna to four goals. Goalie Reggie Robles had four of his eight blocks in the final period.
Dos Pueblos is now 13-5 on the season.
La Serna 13, Santa Barbara 9
Jerrad Burford had three goals and Ryder Green, Mateo Obando and John Shafer scored two each in the non-league loss. Francisco Valladares had four steals.
Santa Barbara hosts Dos Pueblos on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.
8-MAN FOOTBALL
Quarterback Kent Dunn threw five touchdown passes and rushed for 70 yards to lead Laguna Blanca’s football team to a 52-12 rout of New Designs.
Wide receiver Gabe Lea caught three scoring passes and had an interception and two pass deflections on defense.
Carson Stewart led the defense with eight tackles, five tackles for losses and a sack
“What was special about this game is that all 13 of our players made plays for us,” said coach Matt Escobar. “Our offensive line, led by sophomore Dylan Comis, junior James Couvillion, and junior Cole Sharpton, had a great game opening up holes in the run game and protecting their teammates in the pass. Just a great team win.”
Laguna Blanca is 3-2.
WOMEN’S WATER POLO
SBCC went 4-0 at the Cuesta MidState Invitational over the weekend.
The Vaqueros opened with a 17-9 win over Cuesta in a Western State Conference game and followed with victories over Riverside (15-6), Long Beach (13-6) and Sierra (13-6).
Jenna Olson led Santa Barbara with 13 goals over the weekend, while Claire Daland and Eden Tal had 10 each.
Daland scored five goals in the win over Long Beach.
SBCC goalkeepers, as Ava Donleavy tallied eight saves and Chloe McKay had five. The 13 saves were tied for the Vaqueros’ second-highest total of the season and the most since their season-opener.
SBCC will play its first home game of the year on Wednesday against Ventura at 12 p.m. at Santa Barbara High.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The No. 25 SBCC women’s volleyball team defeated previously undefeated No. 2 Ventura at home, 25-23, 19-25, 25-20, 25-21.
The Vaqueros improve to 8-7 with their fourth straight win, while the Pirates move to 13-1.
“Our setters led the way with their leadership and set the pace for our balanced offense,” said coach Kat Niksto. “Mikyala Butzke also flashed her offensive prowess, leading the team in kills with eight. Outside hitter Ava Guenther and opposite Caroline McCarty were both forces to be reckoned with both offensively and defensively.”
Guenther went for seven kills and two aces while McCarty had seven kills, six blocks and a pair of aces.
Butzke had a team-high 17 assists for her third-highest total of the season.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Sofia Orozco scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the SBCC women’s soccer team to a 3-1 win over Ventura in the Western State Conference opener at La Playa Stadium.
With their second straight win, the Vaqueros improve to 4-1-4 while Ventura falls to 4-5-3 overall, 2-1-0 conference.
Orozco assisted on the go-ahead goal in the 44th minute, crossing the ball to Hannah McLain for the finish and a 2-1 lead.
The San Marcos alum made it 3-1 in the 51st minute off an assist from Santa Barbara High alum Athena Bow Graham.
Orozco opened the scoring in the third minute.
