San Marcos High didn’t play its best basketball on Thursday but still came away with a 42-34 girls basketball win over La Reina in a Nordhoff Tournament pool-play game that was played at the Royals’ Thunderhut.

“We trailed 14-11 after a quarter but we stuck with it to come back and win by eight,” said coach Aaron Solis. “Although we got the victory, the team knows I’m not really happy with it and hopefully they are not happy with it either. We made way too many mistakes tonight and we have to clean this up really quick.

“I was proud of how Piper Nielson, Vanessa Herrera and Denise Ricardo played tonight. They came off the bench and really gave us a lift when we needed it.”

Kiani Rojas and Lily Poehler paced the Royals with eight points apiece.

San Marcos will play at Nordhoff on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
