Senior Bryan Shott impressed in just his third time playing singles for the San Marcos boys tennis team in a 16-2 season-opening win over Valencia on Thursday.

Shott, a three-time Channel League champion in doubles, swept his three singles sets (6-2, 6-0, 6-0) against theVikings.

“Bryan has sacrificed so much for our team to win Channel League three years in a row,” coach Jarrod Bradley said. “His serve is much improved and he’s hitting his groundstroke with more pace and spin.”

Freshmen twins Charlie and Joey Friedman started their high school careers in impressive fashion, sweeping their three sets in doubles, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

“Charlie and Joey complement each other well,” said Bradley. “Charlie was stellar at the net today and Joey set him up for easy points with his kick serve and penetrating groundstrokes.”

Juniors Sam Friedm and and Alex Wilson teamed up for the other sweep, winning 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.

“Sam and Alex played well under pressure in two close sets. The improved their play throughout the match today,” said Bradley.

The Royals are back in action Monday at home against San Luis Obispo.
