Freshman Gigi Gritt went the distance for the San Marcos softball team in a 3-2 loss against Santa Paula on Thursday.

Santa Paula scored all its runs in the first two innings, and Gritt allowed only two base runners after that.

She was backed by some solid defensive plays by Claire Early, Allie Fryklund, Cassandra Perez and Desiree Teran, and Morgan Jensen did an outstanding job controlling the game behind the plate, said coach Jeff Swann.

Kyla Robbins hit her first homer of the season in the second inning and Earl singled home Izabella Velasquez in the fifth for the other San Marcos run.

San Marcos (0-2) plays host to Santa Ynez in a Channel League opener on Friday.
