San Marcos won five of the last six sets to pull away for a 12-6 boys tennis victory over Dos Pueblos on Friday in a Channel League match.

It was the first loss for the Chargers (3-1).

Jed Greenwald, the Royals’ No. 2 singles player, pulled out a 6-4 victory over DP’s No. 1 Will Steinberg in the third round to complete a 3-0 sweep.

No. 1 Masato Perera didn’t lose a game in sweeping his three singles sets for the 4-0 Royals.

“Our singles players showed a lot of resolve today,” said San Marcos coach Jarrod Bradley. “Masa dictated nearly every point from the onset, while Jed crafted his points more carefully, waiting for the best time to hit a winner while moving his opponents side-to-side. Matthew Chung bounced back in the third round, maintaining great consistency from the baseline and approaching for opportune volley winners.”

San Marcos went 5-4 in doubles, losing three sets by a break.

Ronin Suzuki and Alex Wilson went down 4-1 in their first-round match before running off five games in a row.

“Ronin and Alex showed great confidence and perseverance today. They set the tone for the team today with their leadership and play on the court,” said Bradley.

Daniel Truong and Keaton Cross of Dos Pueblos swept in the doubles line-up, 6-1, 6-4, 6-4

“We were really pushed in our physical and mental games versus the Royals,” said DP coach Laura Housinger. “We knew many of their returning players and have had close matches with them in the past, but today they were able to close out points and sets better than us. I know that we can continue to work on our games and have a stronger showing against them at the end of the month.”
