After another day of searching, Santa Maria police said Thursday night that they don’t believe a missing man is in a flood control basin, but his whereabouts remain unknown.

Thursday’s search efforts included the Santa Maria Police Department with assistance from the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff Search & Rescue Dive Team as they conducted another extensive search of the flood control reservoir at Canal Street and Blosser Road.

The dive team utilized special watercraft that was aided by sonar and imaging technology, according to Sgt. Daniel Rios from the Police Department’s Detective Bureau.

Searchers concluded efforts with law enforcement believing that missing person David Navarro, 32, is not in the reservoir, Rios said.

Crews also had searched the area on Wednesday after a woman reported late Tuesday night that her male acquaintance had entered the fenced-off area surrounding a nearby stormwater retention basin and that he could not be located.

Officers recovered what they believe to be Navarro’s jacket from the water in the same general area.

In addition to underwater equipment, searches also used a drone and a helicopter to look for the missing man.

Anyone who may have been in the area of this incident about 11 p.m. Tuesady and those who may have any information related to Navarro’s whereabouts are encouraged to contact the Santa Maria Police Department at 805.928.3781 x2277.
