Santa Barbara High opened its girls beach volleyball season with a 2-1 non-league win over Westlake at Zuma Beach on Wednesday.

The teams played three instead of the usual five matches because Westlake had a smaller squad, said Santa Barbara coach Kristin Hempy.

The Dons’ No. 1 duo of Campbell Brown and Mary Johnson lost a tough three-set match, 21-19, 18-21, 15-12.

No. 2 Shae Delany/Stella Borgioli won in straight games (21-12, 21-15) as did No. 3 Carolina Koceman/Gracie Meinzer (21-12, 21-19).

“It was our season opener, so a great opportunity to get settled and work out our rhythms,” said Hempy. “We’re happy to start off with a win and hope to build on that with our upcoming matches against Oak Park on Friday and at Redwood on Saturday.”
